If you're ever faced with the question of whether citizens should vote, always err on the side of encouraging participation."  -  Edward Boersma

Edward Boersma - Candidate for Prairie Village City Council Ward 2

My name is Edward Boersma. My family moved to Kansas City in 2019. We picked Prairie Village on the recommendation of friends who live in the area. We looked for and chose a home close to The Shops and within walking distance to Indian Hills Middle School. Prairie Village has been a blessing for my family and we are grateful for our decision.

Why I'm Running for Prairie Village City Council in Ward 2

In my view, I have seen consistent, poor, city government management by the governing body over the past years - Edward Boersma
  • Moving forward with the $30 M City Hall Construction Project after a majority of residents opposed it and then not allowing a Vote.
  • City Budget increasing at a significant rate.
  • Ridiculously long City Council Meetings that discourage public interest.
  • Rewriting the Commercial Zoning Code to allow apartments in shopping centers, disenfranchising Prairie Village residents.
  • The attempt to quietly, re-write R1 Zoning Code.
  • Consistently spending money on non-core city projects; $33,000 to Ukraine, agendas, non-profits.
  • The failed Community Center took several years, hundreds of city staff hours, cost hundreds of thousands of dollars from the City, that ultimately got so expensive and massive, residents forced a No vote.
  • Building park bathrooms for over $450,000 with an unauditable expense statement.
  • The City hiring public relation firms to push political agendas.
  • Passing a 20-year city plan, Village Vision 2.0, during a Global Pandemic.

My Goals For Prairie Village

Prairie Village City Government Management
  • Reduce the time of City Council Meeting, encouraging resident participating and attendance.
  • Clearly defined projects with clearly defined goals that meet the core needs of Prairie Village.
  • Actively listen to residents. When there is push-back; I will pause, meet with the concerned parties and consider their input. In addition, I will meet with any resident of Prairie Village anytime.
City Expenses
  • I represent the tax paying residents of Prairie Village.
  • City funds will only be spent on core city projects; staff salaries, public safety, infrastructure, parks, public works, administration.
  • Require city departments to suggest funding cuts.
  • Have monthly audits for a full budget year, randomly every 3 - 5 years to improve clarity and address wasteful spending habits.
  • Stop spending tax payer dollars on agendas, foreign countries or private parties. If residents of Prairie Village want to financially support these activities. Funds should be raised privately. You will finds pockets of residents that will support every cause. The people of Prairie Village are very generous and should support causes that are close to their heart; the City Government should not.
City Construction Projects
  • Auditable details for every Prairie Village City construction project. An example of the City not doing this is the Windsor Park Restroom construction project. It has a single line item: Restroom - $285,869.68. There is no way to audit this single line item.
  • City of Prairie Village is proposing to build a new City Hall for $23 Million and to redevelop the Municipal Complex for $30 Million. A project of this magnitude should be voted on by the residents.
  • I believe the City should renovate the existing municipal building. This is a more reasonable approach that saves the City of Prairie Village millions of dollars.
  • I do not support purchasing LEED Certification for Prairie Village City construction projects. LEED Certification provides a plaque and nothing more. This is a waste of hundreds of thousands of dollars that does not improve construction quality or quality of life.
It is important for the City Council of Prairie Village to respect their neighbors and their due process rights.
